7:00 PM - 9:30 PM28 St John's Wood Road, London, NW8 7HAEnemies, a Love Story is a 1989 American tragicomedy film directed by Paul Mazursky, and is an adaptation of the 1966 novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer.
This thought-provoking film is set in 1949 New York, and follows the serio-comic post War trials of Holocaust survivor Herman Broder (played by Ron Silver). The story focuses on Herman’s romantic liaisons with three women: Yadwiga, his Polish servant from ‘the old country’; Masha, a passionate fellow survivor; and Tamara, his first wife.
Herman’s complicated entanglements bring out the central themes of the film which are human resilience and the existential absurdity of life. As film critic Roger Ebert said of the Herman character: “Guilt Herman understands. Love is the enemy."
