About the Cemetery

Our cemetery, which has a War Memorial and a Holocaust Memorial was opened in 1914 and should remain active for another 50 years.

Space is available for burials and interment of ashes for Members and Non-members of the LJS.  Although only Jewish Members of the LJS have Burial Rights in the cemetery, it is a general policy of the Synagogue not to separate in death those who were together in life.  This becomes increasingly important as mixed faith partners grow old.   Jewish Non-members and their partners are also welcome to apply to the Synagogue for burial at our Cemetery.

Visitors are welcome during opening hours: 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday and 9.00am to 4.00pm on Sunday and Bank Holidays. The cemetery is closed on Saturdays, Jewish holidays and 25th December.

A record of all graves and ashes is held by the cemetery superintendent and burial information can be obtained on request.

The cemetery offers a number of alternatives including: rose gardens, small ashes graves, columbarium, family plots, and burial in depth.  We also provide a service for washing and maintaining graves.   It is possible to reserve plots.

No charge is made to Members for a plot (except when joining over the age of 65)  , but since the Synagogue does not run or subscribe to any Burial Scheme, the deceased's estate or heirs must meet the cost of the funeral and/or cremation.

Deciding what you would like to happen to your remains is an important life decision and one that will aid your next of kin with their arrangements.  Please call our cemetery co-ordinator at the synagogue if you would like to discuss arrangements for you or your loved ones.
