The Archive

Bimah elevn plan

Welcome to the LJS Archive. Our main features are LJS Council minutes, Annual Reports, service and High Holy Day records, rabbinic correspondence regarding the Liberal Movement and our liaison with other progressive, reform and liberal congregations. We also have a special section on our cemetery at Pound Lane in Willesden.

The LJS Archives hold records from the inception of the Liberal Movement and in particular records of The LJS. For enquiries please contact the Archivist at archives@ljs.org.

Records of the rebuilding of the present synagogue have been methodically kept and we have schemes and drawings from the architects. We also have a good number of photographs; some of them are quite old, showing past synagogue buildings and services. They are being sorted and will be digitized to preserve the original image.
Our Archives have been a useful resource for scholars and writers alike. Some of the most important sermons and correspondence of Lily Montagu, Claude Montefiore and our first Rabbi Israel Mattuck have been deposited with the London Metropolitan Archives in Clerkenwell for public access. Please refer to London Metropolitan Archives for a catalogue of our deposit.

Work of the Archives is continuous; preserving history is an active approach to laying foundations for our future. The Archives are undergoing extensive cataloging, itemizing and digitizing and conservation.

Volunteers can choose to engage in the following:

1. Technical tasks of digitizing or data entry (documents and photographs)
2. Administrative tasks of itemizing, cataloging and re-ordering
3. Challenging tasks of conservation (cleaning, labeling, restoring and preserving documents and photos)

The amount of work ahead is quite extensive, so if you are interested in participating, we welcome casual contributors (who are coming in to help for a day or two, or a set period) and of course delight in getting long term volunteers. We also have a donation scheme if you wish to contribute towards keeping our historical documents, volumes and photographs safe to tell the story of the Liberal Movement to a wider public.

Please do get in touch with us, let's share a wonderful history and make it a vibrant part of our spiritual life today.
